Issue 01: No One Talks About This Side of Success
Welcome to the first edition of Inspire Your Story
I’m Asha Agarwal, Founder of Inspire New Homes, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over my 25 years+ working in property, it’s that the most valuable lessons rarely appear on a CV.
I’ve never seen a CV that includes: “The mistake that changed how I lead” or “The project that nearly broke my confidence.” Or how about “The moment I questioned whether I was good enough” Have you?
Yet those experiences often shape us far more than our successes ever do.
I grew up in social housing on a council estate where career networks and industry connections weren’t readily accessible to me at the time. Like many people entering the industry, I had no roadmap, no network and no clear understanding of how to navigate the opportunities ahead of me.
The people who shared their experiences, opened doors and invested their time in me, changed the course of my career and I’ve never forgotten that.
We celebrate success in our industry – the promotion, the award, the completed developments, the growing business and the leadership role. We see the outcomes and applaud the milestones, but we rarely talk about everything that sits behind them: the setbacks, the difficult decisions, moments of self-doubt and the conversations that keep you awake at night.
The truth is, no one really prepared me for that side of success.
For the past six years, I’ve run my own consultancy, working with organisations across the property industry. It’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made and has created opportunities I could never have imagined when I first entered the sector.
One thing surprised me – Success can be far lonelier than people realise.
Every new project means starting again. New teams, new clients and new challenges. You spend months building trust, becoming part of something, helping solve problems and delivering outcomes, only to move on and start all over again.
From the outside, people see progress. What they don’t always see is the journey. Yet it’s often the journey that teaches us the most.
Over the years, I’ve come to realise that careers are rarely built on knowledge alone. They’re built on resilience, adaptability, relationships and the ability to keep moving forward when things don’t go to plan. Sometimes, they’re built on nothing more than having the courage to keep showing up.
That’s the reality not enough people talk about.
The shift that changed everything
I joined the Board of Women in Social Housing (WISH) London. Professionally, it was a huge honour. Personally, it reinforced something I’ve been thinking about for a long time…
Success doesn’t remove the need for belonging. If anything, it makes it more important.
Being surrounded by people who understand the pressures, responsibilities, ambitions and challenges that come with building a career reminded me that none of us are supposed to navigate these journeys alone.
Many of the conversations that matter most never happen publicly. We talk about outcomes but not what it took to get there. We share achievements but not always the lessons. We celebrate success but rarely explore the story behind it.
That’s why I’m launching Inspire Your Story, to share these stories with you.
Inspire Your Story
This newsletter is for the conversations we don’t normally have in real estate. The stories behind the job titles, the lessons behind the successes and the moments that shaped people long before anyone noticed their achievements.
Whether you’re taking your first steps in the industry or leading from the front, Inspire Your Story is for people who believe growth never stops. It’s for those building careers, creating opportunities, embracing challenges and continually learning along the way.
Later this year, I’ll be launching the Inspire Your Story Podcast, where I’ll be speaking to leaders from across real estate about the journeys, challenges and lessons that shaped their careers. My hope is that by sharing honest conversations, we can help more people realise they’re not alone in the challenges they face and inspire the next generation to build careers with confidence and purpose.
Sometimes the story that changes your perspective is simply hearing how somebody else found their way through. If you’ve ever questioned yourself, wondered whether you’re on the right path or felt like everyone else has it figured out except you, you’re not alone.
Most of us are figuring it out as we go. We just don’t talk about it enough.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned
Success isn’t something we’re supposed to build alone. We often focus on qualifications, experience and achievements, but careers are equally shaped by relationships, support networks and the people we learn from along the way.
A lesson I’d like you to take away from the first edition is this:
Don’t wait until you’ve figured everything out before putting yourself forward.
Build relationships before you need them. Ask questions, even when you think you should know the answer. Stay curious enough to keep learning. Seek out opportunities. Most importantly, when someone opens a door for you, remember to hold it open for someone else.
Looking back, the biggest turning points in my career weren’t promotions or job titles. They were opportunities, someone sharing advice, making an introduction, believing in me or giving me a chance before I felt ready. Those moments changed my career, and they remind me that we all have the ability to create opportunities for others.
It all comes back to one simple belief:
Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t.
